General Comments

I have only just bought this Siemens S55. After having owned a motorola v66i I thought well it's about time I got something with more functionality. At first it seemed ok but as soon as you try to do more than just look at it or use it as a simple telephone the problems begin. Firstly, the camera. What a joke. It was actually one of the reasons I was sold this phone in the first place. It is so useless as to be less than worthless. It falls off the camera and if you are anything other than really careful while taking a photo it will disconnect itself and you will lose the picture. That is assuming you got the opportunity to take the photo in the first place. By the time you connected the camera, gone thru the menu options and waited for the phone to get itself into camera mode, your subjects will be long gone. And even if you do get a shot it will be the worst quality you can imagine. As for the rest of the onboard functions. Forget it. Dismal in todays market place no wonder Siemens are struggling and have been for several years now. This is what happens when the accountants take over. Poor

'It falls off the camera and if you are anything other than really careful while taking a photo it will disconnect itself and you will lose the picture.'

Perhaps you have a dodgy camera...My S55 is fine with the cam. I can hold it by the cam or phone and it doesn't fall off.

'By the time you connected the camera, gone thru the menu options and waited for the phone to get itself into camera mode, your subjects will be long gone.'

Gone through what options? You plug the camera in and then hit the 'Camera' soft key on the left. I will admit..Camera mode does take a bit long to happen.

'And even if you do get a shot it will be the worst quality you can imagine.'

Once again, perhaps it's a dodgy camera. The S55 pictures are amazingly good quality for a phone camera. No one should be expecting proper digital camera quality from it. You can find some great examples on the Club-Siemens.com forum.

'As for the rest of the onboard functions. Forget it. Dismal in todays market...'

I can't really comment on this as I don't know what features you're talking about. Considering this is a business phone, the features are great. It has everything a business person should need from a phone. AFAIK.

I can only say again like the other comment, I think too it is a dodgy camera, mine is a tight fit (oooeeer!) and works reasonably perfect for a cheap camera. as for the low marks for feayures, ha!, it is packed with features. I bought it instead of buying a modem or PC card for my laptop, and it does it brilliantly, and fast using GPRS. picks up e mails without laptop, allsorts of stuff. AND THE CAMERA WAS AN EXTRA.

Regarding camera-phones in general, IMO if you want a 'take anywhere' camera I'd go for a phone with an integrated camera and good screen resolution coz if you need to carry around an extra piece of kit to attach to the phone you might as well take a decent digital camera with you instead. Camera aside, this phone is packed with features, E-Mail, Bluetooth, GPRS, WAP, Infra-red, Tri-Band, Java, MS Outlook synchronisation and really deserves 4 or 5 stars for features. I've had mine a couple of weeks (didn't buy the camera - don't need it), bought it mainly for business connectivity and so far it's lived up to all expectations. At last I can connect my Jornada 710 connected to the internet via infra red (just waiting for the GPRS bill - arggh!).

    bilbo,
What do you mean you didnt buy the camera, correct me if I am wrong, but all packages of the s55 come with camera. I doubt if I would have bought one if it meant forking out 60 - 100 quids for one, but I didnt, as I said b4, an added bonus the camera.

    xant14,
not all packages of the siemens s55 phone come with a camera. for example:
the carphone warehouse sells the camera seperately.
