General Comments

My son has had his bike for 2 weeks. It was a Christmas present. We took it back today for second time. The first time it went back, it was because the handle bars were insecure. Now the chain comes off when cornering, and gears slip and grind. The chain is now jammed solid between the crank and the frame. It turns out that the Halfords Kirkcaldy store only has a bike mechanic working 2 days out of 7.

If "the handlebars were insecure" - with all due respect, that could have been rectified in about five seconds yourself with an Allen key. If you choose to own a cycle, you should know the basics about how they work. At the end of the day, a bike is a road-going vehicle, and if you did not feel able to tighten (literally) one or two bolts yourself, then pardon me, but you should not be owning or riding a bike. Personally, I would be embarassed to take a bike back to a bike shop for what is literally a ten-second "job", I would have just tightened the handlebars myself to save the hassle.

On the other hand, Halfords should not have let the bike leave the shop in an un-rideable state, so I sort of see where you are coming from. Halfords is at fault for allowing you to collect (and ride off on) a bike that had not been adequately assembled.

Where do you draw the line?

Sorry, Skinner100, I have just read the rest of your post regarding the gear and chain issues with your bike, and I realise I might have been a bit harsh with my last reply, for which I apologise. Halfords have clearly let you down with the state of the bike that they supplied you with.
