Good Points

I've had American Express since 1971. The card is taken most everywhere.


Bad Points

Don't expect American Express to be a strong advocate for you the consumer. Since 1971, I have had only 2 disputed charges: one where a hotel booked me for 2 nights when I stayed only one. The other charge was a EuroRail reservation, which, due to illness, I could not fulfil, and which I alerted the ticket issuers as soon as possible...and certainly early enough to receive credit for the transaction. AE sided with the merchant in both cases. The EuroRail reservation was the most galling, since I was charged $570.00 for 2 round trip fares from Madrid to Sevilla.
When I finally made the trip, the round trip fares were much cheaper.


General Comments

I had always considered American Express my advocate in all disputed transactions. Instead, I find that AE is a advocate for the merchant. Don't count on AE as a fair arbitor, and certainly not a consumer advocate.
