General Comments
I've recently decided to buy myself a tropical fish tank, and knowing nothing about fish, I decided to do some research to ensure I did it the right way. It so happens that there's a lot more to fish keeping than buying a tank and some goldfish and setting it all up in the same day.
Some 6 months ago my mum purchased a tank and 3 goldfish from Pets R Wright, which they happily sold her. She set it up the same day and added the fish the same day. One fish has since died, and the remaining two have stunted growth and deformed fins.
Since reading up, I've found that Goldfish should be kept in aquariums no smaller than 3 feet in length (approximately 80 litres of water). The tank sold to us is a foot in length and holds only 10 Litres of water. This is a serious difference - keeping fish well and ensuring they don't die is dependant upon water quality, and the less water, the harder the task.
Granted, that had we done our research before buying these goldfish, we would have bought a larger tank. HOWEVER, those employees in pet shops should have training enough to know what is acceptable and what isn't. It appears that, with this particular shop, it's all about the money. Sad really, considering that had my mum been told that such a small tank was insufficient she would have bought a larger tank, thus increasing their sale.
