Good Points

Friendly staff, beach security, clean rooms, Satellite TV. Gambian food dishes. Cheap outside of the hotels.

Bad Points

Bumsters, the guys who follow you all over the place as soon as you leave the hotel. You come on holiday to relax not be pestered by these local guys.

General Comments

This is my third time in The Gambia ('93, '02). It's a place that can be intimidating if you have the bumsters following you around. I took the Mrs and my son aged 5 to visit my Dad who has retired out there. Make sure you go for a wander around Banjul during the day as there is lots to see. There are also loads of corner shops that sell baguette sandwiches that you can have buttered and filled with stuff such as corned beef, sardines or chicken, for the equivalent of 20 pence! Have your breakfast in the hotel but try to eat out and about during the afternoon. We ate in the hotel on the first night but then at Michelle's restaurant, which was a 5 minute walk from the hotel. You could get all types of food in there including burgers, fish and also local dishes such as Benachin which tastes wonderful. I would not suggest you eat in the hotel as it is way overpriced, in Gambian terms, and isn't that great! A Pepsi/Fanta in the hotel was 45 Dalasis, around £1, whereas at the corner shops, there are loads of them all over Banjul, it is 10 Dalasis and when you return the bottle you get 2 Dalasis back! I am already looking at going back as soon as I can in 2007 but may extend my stay to two weeks this time. There is normally a football match on a Saturday/Sunday at the stadium.
