Good Points

Great Italian styling, not common like BMW and Mercedes. S model is very fast. Gets compliments everywhere. Handles great in both auto and sport setting. Great sound from the best V6 ever. More powerful than other sport sedans of the period. Exclusive ride. Well appointed, all leather, all power, sun roof, keyless entry and alarm fitted as standard, plus it's ITALIAN...

Bad Points

Some parts are hard to find since Alfa left the U.S. in 1995 and a good technician is a must. Only and I mean only go to an Alfa expert. Some parts that are non Alfa factory are no good such as head gaskets. Spend the $400 for the right gaskets and they will last 100,000 miles or more. Buy the after market ones and redo the job in less than a year. Alfas also need periodic and expensive servicing and when things go wrong it's always costly.

General Comments

If you see an Alfa 164 S or L for that matter for $1200 to $1600. Either run like hell, be prepared to toss in another $3000 or be a back yard or real Alfa tech. Having owned 3 164's and many rear drive Alfas I would highly suggest buying one with a service history that is not word of mouth but documented. Call the shop and ask about the car - a lot of shops will tell you if a car needs work or has been abused by the previous owner. Water pumps, timing belts and head gaskets would be my first concern. Engines are rock solid if not over heated.
