Good Points

Comes in handy if you travel a lot. The travel insurance is excellent, and it is worth £100 a year easily, and the concierge service is helpful (most of the time).

Bad Points

The cost - now £300 per year.
It is not taken everywhere, especially restaurants owned by Mr Stein and Mr Oliver (how embarrassing).

The flowers for Mothers Day were delivered a day late - useless - but they also included a large box of chocolates to say sorry.

General Comments

I traded up to the American Express Platinum Credit Card from a Gold, and I was apprehensive as to whether I would use all the services. I travel a lot, but mainly mileage and hotels. The flight offers are good, but I can get a better deal using the same software American Express do, without a processing charge (which was a little rich).

We have been saved by a few things though: In Sorrento, we had a damaged car due to the parking attendant, which was not noticed until we were back at the hotel - all underwritten by American Express. Travel insurance is worth at least £100 per year and it is free. Also, the access to the private lounges at airports is fab!!

In London, we could not get a table on a Saturday night in Soho - a quick call to the concierge and they had us booked in, with directions and immediate service - this in itself has paid the subscription.

Overall good, but the best bit was a snobby man in a restaurant who was all "blah blah" on the table next to us on the mobile to whoever. He then paid proudly, putting his gold Amex down to pay, and looked over at me, as I was a tad scruffy. By a quirk of fate I paid at the same time with the platinum - his face was a picture.

The only people who respect the card IMHO are those who have any other Amex card, excluding Centurion of course. Get this privilege thing out of your head and you will be fine - just don't forget you need to settle each month.
