Good Points

Why buy a new car ever??? You can buy a 180 horse power, top of the range Golf for under 1500 pounds. A non-dated looking model (better than Golf mk 4) vr6 classic Golf!

Bad Points

I have always had Golfs so I know their faults: cv joints/boots, suspension does not live up to VW's name, rust always lingering, the vr6 is thirsty but so are all the others. Interior not robust but EVERYTHING is easy to acquire and replace (eBay-type in vr6...).

General Comments

My friend just bought a mk5 GTI - beautiful, 200 bhp, black with nice alloys and interior, BUT it does not look like a Golf should - it's an A3 with a VW badge. It costs £20,000 pounds and by the time he has paid it off - the mk3 will be just as valuable with all the depreciation these new cars experience. Look at the tail lights of the new Golf - poor asthetics. Anyway, if I won a new Golf mk5 GTI, I would be happy, but I would sell it straight away and get a later vr6 for £4000 with low mileage and put a stage 1 turbo on it for £2000 which will make it 300+ bhp and spend £1500 on cosmetics. I would then have a stunning car, with £12,500 pounds in the bank for a property investment. I love vr6's forever and never ever want anything else.
