General Comments

Bonnie and Clyde is a classic film about Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker who led a "gang" of bankrobbers who stole from the rich and gave to the poor and became folk heroes for their attitude towards authority in the Depression-era U.S. The premise is, a bored Bonnie meets the dashing Clyde and he tells her he's a bankrobber. She falls in love immediately and goes with him and helps him and eventually his "gang" to rob banks. They get chased by police and it all ends in a bloody shootout. They become folk heroes along the way. The film is rife with weird themes, such as Clyde being incapable of consumating his relationship with Bonnie and as a result he feels the need to be violent and hyper-masculine.

This film gets shouted about so much but frankly I thought it was rather ridiculous. Sure, Faye Dunaway looks smashing throughout and the acting is great but the idea that she falls in love and becomes a bank robber within the space of about 30 minutes (real time, more like 5 in film time) is ludicrous. And the whole idea that killing people and robbing banks is somehow glamourous and made them free spirits and was sticking it to authority is also ridiculous. It was violent, psychotic criminal activity. It's hard to get lost in the fantasy of the thing when the thing itself is horrible and unthinkable.

So, yeah, classic film, well made and all, but the story just didn't grab me. Frankly they deserved what they got in the end.
