General Comments

When I asked for Halifax Mini Cash ISA statements in order to apply for a mortgage, they said it would take 7 - 10 working days, but they never arrived. I called to find out why. Their system couldn't tell if one had been sent out, so all they could do was re-order (another 7 - 10 working day wait). These also never arrived. I complained about this and about the standard long wait to receive a statement - I compared it to Lloyds' 3 - 5 day wait. They angrily said I couldn't compare "I'm sorry but YOU don't work here so you can't comment, and you can't compare us with Lloyds because we have a different system to them!" was the exclamation. I tried to explain that the differences in internal systems between the two organisations was of no interest me - that I was comparing service - that I was requiring an identical service from each place and getting wildly different results (Lloyds sent me my statements within 3 working days). But this just didn't compute. I made a complaint, but the woman I spoke to just didn't get it "that's right, we do have different systems so you can't compare". No, I'm comparing the SERVICE - THE SERVICE!!!

I never did get my Halifax ISA statement. Luckily the mortgage lender didn't notice this omission, but I might not have got my mortgage in time to avoid paying stamp duty (the seller had agreed to pay stamp duty if I completed by a certain date; a fact which I tried to impress upon Halifax, but they were unmoved by this). They could have cost me over $8000 if I had been obliged to pay my stamp duty. Luckily, my mortgage supplier was also incompetent and didn't notice the missing statements (swings and roundabouts I guess)!
