I was very loyal to Mint for 6 or 7 years, and I used it as my principal card - even recommended it to friends. They had wonderfully helpful customer service people who really cared about their cardholders; and they made it very easy for you to pay your account by phone (24 hour service with prompt responses). It was certainly a cut above other cards. If you'd had a hard time getting through to them they would sometimes even backdate your payments if you missed the payment date by a few hours.
BUT, the whole ethos seems suddenly to have changed in the past few months. In October, I got back very late at night on my payment date and decided I'd pay the first thing the next morning. MINT refused point blank to tell me whether there would be a late payment charge, or whether they would (as they had a year before) take account of the fact that I'd paid within a few hours of the deadline. My account when it arrived charged me both for late payment and for some hefty interest. I got in touch, pointing out I was a good customer spending £1000 to £2000 a month on their card and settling promptly every month - and that they had previously been considerate when (rarely) I'd had trouble paying on the day. The guy I spoke to me told me dismissively that a few hours late was still late. No manager was available, but he finally agreed that a manager would phone me. Nobody bothered to make the effort, so, a week later, I phoned again. Spoke to a manager, who didn't even really apologise for nobody having got back to me. She said that Mint had changed its courtesy policy in January regarding backdating payments, but hadn't bothered to tell anybody (she implied that it was nobodies business but theirs).
Something has gone badly wrong with this card. It was never cheap, but it had the best-trained, most efficient and most helpful customer service people. Either morale has slumped badly or they're employing people with minimal charm and training, or the card is under new management who seem determined to lift as much money as it can, and to disregard the normal process of keeping customers informed of changes regarding the Mint credit card.
