Good Points

Good on fuel and fast enough for a beginner or returning biker - nice riding position, parts are easily got, very easy to work on and maintain even for a novice with plenty of second hand models about so you can pick and choose the bike that suits you.

Bad Points

Rear brakes aren't great, caliper bad for seizing, not much street cred and a bit blowy over 70mph (naked XJ600N)

General Comments

This is my second biggish bike, my first was a BMW 650 Funduro but I wanted something with more grunt and more pistons.
The Yamaha XJ600N is a good bike for a novice to get used to that big bike feel. It's fast enough and handles reasonably, is good on fuel and is quite a forgiving bike. The back brake is not as sharp as it should be and there seems to be a problem with the rear calipers on these bikes seizing but second hand ones are got cheaply enough. Apart from that I have great fun on it - I have dyno tuned it and had a k&n filter fitted so it's pretty nippy.
All in all, a good bike in my opinion, however if your like me you will probably get a bit bored with it and want a fireblade or similar very soon after owning the XJ600N but hey that's what biking is all about.
