i/r port only used for modem connection.
General Comments
I have recently purchased this phone and it is the latest GX10i, this model has addressed some of the earlier problems as you can now upload/download images to the phone using the software on the sharp support website .This software appears to be the mobile action technology software cut down and uses a serial port data connection, the software from MAT uses usb connection and the only advantage is that messages can be sent but neither will allow tone tranfers. The deciding reason i chose the GX10i was pictures, as the panasonic GD87 only tranfers pictures on-to the pc the same size as they are on the phone screen(very small) but in varying quality whilst the gx10i you can send pictures to the pc in quite reasonable size images 288x352.

Hey nice review. I'm getting the Sharp GX10i tomorrow and i've chosen it over various other (Samsung V200, Panasonic GD87 etc). You mentioned that you can transfer the pictures to your pc justwondering if you need anything extra to what you get in the box and if it's a complicated process?

Hi thanks for the comment, the software can be downloaded fron the Sharp support website as the cd contains the infra-red drivers and is only any good to use the phone as a modem not for pictures. You will need a data cable with rs232/connector(not usb) to use this free software from Sharp and can be bought from most places including ebay for about £10-£15.

I have tried 3 different serial datacables on my GX10i, none of them worked so i ended up with the MA USB and Handset Manager software bundle. This works a treat.....any picture you like can be uploaded to your phone :-)
<br>My only gripe with the phone is not being able to send your pics via infrared to other infrared enabled phones....but hey...nothings perfect is it !!!

I own a GX10i & bought a cheap (£10) serial data lead from Ebay with unlocking software for a GX10. The cable works fine with the software from the support website altho I would like the ability to transfer the phone book.

Does Handset Manager allow you download SMS Messages you received? I can't seem to find any software out there that can do this!

I found that the USB software did do SMS both way working but I felt it wasnt worth the cost (£40) to be able to do it.

Does anyone know if you can send/receive sounds over infrared or is it purely just for modem use?

Does anyone know if it possible to backup phone numbers stored on the phone via either a cable or IR. Also, is it possible to send Ring tones by either cable or IR.

I have a USB data cable for my GX10i, but no software for manager. I want to be able to upload/download my pictures - does anyone know of a link to a site where I can download some decent software?
