Good Points

inexpensive, multitude of features/controls, small/compact, great picture quality!

Bad Points

extreme corners of pictures are soft/fuzzy at f3.6, much better at f5.6

General Comments

The Canon A300 can compete with some of the best 3.2 megapixels cameras available today in terms of picture quality. No, it does not have an optical zoom lens, just a great wide angle lens (33mm equivalent) that one uses most of the time anyway.
Don't be disappointed and buy a more expensive camera expecting better picture quality than this little camera can deliver, you would be wasting your money. Except for picture softness in the extreme corners - the sharpness, detail and low noise are directly comparable to Canon's (much) more expensive models. I'm impressed with the accurate light metering (I've yet to use the center-weighted or spot metering options), the color (superb, natural, vibrant) and the features (even a custom white balance option!). No, I don't own stock in Canon. It's just a great camera and bargain!
