Egg had first mover advantage in the Internet-only savings account market, and so they have a lot of customers. However, now every bank and banking centre in the land (and many from abroad) offer the same service at the same (or better) interest rates.
I recently closed my Egg Internet Banking account after becoming frustrated at their website being down far more often than is acceptable for an online banking service (they acknowledge they will be shut one day per month, and there are also unexpected, random outages).
What took the biscuit though was due to an unexplained and inexplicable error on their part. They corrupted or lost my wife's mother's maiden name, and so my wife was unable to access the account because they couldn't "verify her". The customer service refused to talk to her to rectify the problem because they couldn't "verify her". A grotesque parody of a Catch-22 that almost defied belief.
Luckily, it was a joint account, and they were able to verify me. And so we were able to rescue our money. But when I tried to explain what they had messed up, I encountered smug, unhelpful staff, even the supervisors.
With so many other banks with better service, both in terms of technology and staff, I heartily recommend you look elsewhere.
