The iPod hard drives fail and cannot be fixed. Apple will not repair hard drives, and the cost is equivalent to a new iPod. Apples do not expect hard drives to last for more than a year or so, and eventually all iPod's will break completely. Apple will not do anything to help fix your iPod unless you have Applecare, and even that covers you for only 24 months total.
