On 23rd October, a group of 11 of us arrived in Warrington after travelling a distance of 280 miles and a journey which took over 6 hours. The Swan, a Chef & Brewer Restaurant, was recommended so we decided to eat there. On arrival the restaurant seemed very busy. We spoke to a young man who seemed to be in authority and asked if it would be possible for us to eat there. The young man explained that they were busy but it would be OK if we were prepared to wait an hour or so and were prepared to sit in smaller groups, an arrangement that we were perfectly happy with.

Some time after, the staff realised that 3 members of our group were teenagers aged 14 and 15. The staff then decided that they would not be able to serve us after all, as one section of the restaurant did not allow children under 16 in at all and the other side did not serve "children" after 9 o' clock (despite me explaining that our youngsters were 14 & 15).

We had already waited 1/2 an hour at this point, it was just 9 o'clock and three tables (enough seating for all of us) had just become vacant in the section of the restaurant that allows children but the staff were now unsympathetic and rude and still refused to serve us.

The Swan is located next door to a Premier Travel Inn and receives a great deal of business from it. From looking at the menu I estimate that the restaurant would have made approx £200 from our group's meal orders plus extra for drinks.

We eventually left hungry and tired and moved on to the local 'Toby Carvery' who despite our late arrival, welcomed us all with open arms and we had a lovely meal.

On the pub-explorer website the publicans suggest The Swan offers "a family dining experience to remember" so "why not stay at the Travel Inn next door and pop round to The Swan for a relaxed and comfortable time." This was certainly an experience we will remember but we did not feel comfortable or relaxed, and I would definitely not recommend it to families.
