In an age of automatic everything, it's nice to actually be able to take credit for a shot you take. You actually "make" the shot, and with the incredibly easy-to-see light meter, you simply can't go wrong. Besides, what's the use in spending $1000 for a camera body when it's the lense that's responsible for the quality of the picture? Unless you're into frills that, in my opinion, take away from the art that's involved in picture-taking, I've never quite gotten the fascination with DOP, AP, and 1/4000th shutter speeds. I mean, really... (And by the way, with the lens adaptors available for the k1000, you could virtually put on any lense you want, from an Asahi to a Zeiss.
The ones made later have plastic on the top and bottom instead of metal. Too bad.
The shutter is loud (which I like--makes me feel like each shot was a substantial commitment), the camera is pretty hefty (which means it's solid and dependable), the controls are idiot-proof, and with the lens adapters, it's one of the most versatile cameras ever made. What more can one ask from a camera? Like I said, they don't make'em like this anymore.
