Good Points
The Sport is always wanting to go, you dont need to pump the accelerator to get it moving. Great body shape and nice leather/Suede interior. Small cute and nippy all spring straight to mind. Great road handling and a head turner even without modification. You dont see boy racers with them so that adds to the charm of it. Can easily keep high end road cars on their toes and beat most of them to the 0-62mph mark. Not many small cars have this much power standard and/or without having to use supercharger/turbo units. uses every last drop of fuel wisely even though it has a big engine under the bonnet.

Bad Points
High Insurance on Group 16. More prone to be eyed up by bad people on the rob.

General Comments
It was just sat there on the forecourt when we saw the Clio 172. Iceberg Silver in colour with bodykit as standard, knew right there and then we just had to have it. Most people would think that its one of those cars a boy racer would dream about owning and in most cases, they're right. Group 16 Insurance is high for a 18 year old bass thumping tearaway with his blacked out windows in his Vauxhall Nova SRi. But when your 27. You know you can look at one and say

" Nova,Corsa,Saxo Mmmmm .... NO CONTEST. "

The car is just a dream to drive. Smooth curves, Great handling and it'll pass things without giving them a second glance. 0-62mph in under 10 seconds is enough for anyone, but to do it in 6.8?

The price is right and for the goodies that you get. I wont get rid of this car in a rush !

My mate has one of these, beautiful car. A lot of what you said is quite accurate in my opinion. However the annoying ticking noises etc thats just renault for you. I was torn between a volvo s60 and a clio sport. I bought the volvo. I found the volvo to have better handling due to the traction and more top end hoever the lagging turbo isn't quite as sharp as the lightweight response from the clio.

I have had my clio 172 since may 2000.
i live in germany and have put my foot down a few times and have had 155mph showing on the clock. this has highlighted a few niggles,
1. 13 mpg when on full warp speed
2. flimsy front bumper (mine is coming away from the body at the sides.
3. huge turning circle for a small car
4. engine is now getting tired, erratic tickover, sounds like a bucket of bolts when accelerating hard
5. rear shocks gave up the ghost after 20,000 miles
6. brake pads allround after 23,000 miles
7. a lot of rattles from interior
8. poor paint (they must have put on 1 top coat and no laquer, scratches from carefull washing, front end peppered in stone chips which you dont ever see on an audi tt
9. cramped rear seats compared to rivals
still, with all these problems it is hard to let go of this little tearaway. acceleration is awesome and will trouble cars with lots more horsepower ( there is no better feeling than having a bmw m3 up your rear, letting him past and then sitting on his tail at 155mph
i have decided i need more room, so i am getting a skoda rs estate soon.
a message to all you boy racers- dont spend thousands on making your nova etc faster, buy a 2nd hand sport 172. im willing to take 5 grand for mine.
