General Comments

We had originally booked another hotel, but 4 days before travelling, Cosmos informed me that the hotel was closing early for the season. This hotel overlooked the beach, and it was in fact the nearest to the sea. Cosmos stated they would book us into another hotel of the same rating, and after several phone calls, they stated the only hotel available was Top Olympic in Callela Hi Top, Costa Brava.

I had read bad reviews regarding this hotel, and I asked them to check again for any other hotel. They refused, stating they had checked and this was the only accommodation available in Calella.

The hotel was rated a 3 star (I have since wondered who rates these hotels). We arrived at the hotel by car, as I had driven there from England, taking in the sites of France.
We found the hotel, which is in fact the furthest away from the beach, at least 450 yards. Although Cosmos said it was only 400 meters from the beach. To get to the beach one had to cross the main road going through Calella, which is also the main road between Barcelona and Girona, so it was very busy all through the day time with large lorries.

We were given our room on the 2nd floor. There was no place in the hotel where you could see the sea. It was overlooked seaward by several other hotels. The first thing we saw as we entered the room was dirt. The floor was dirty and the walls were dirty. There was condensation running down the entry door on the inside. The air conditioning did not work. The air conditioning filter system as you entered the room was broken, and one could see the ceiling above, which was covered in cobwebs. The bathroom was dirty with mould around the bath. The grouting between the tiles was black in places, and there were broken tiles that had been glued back broken and not replaced. This was supposed to be a 4 bedroom but 2 beds taken out. If 4 beds were there one would not be able to open the broken wardrobe.
There was only 1 chair in the room, and only one chair on the balcony. No Table. The room overlooked other parts of the hotel, and was also overlooked by other hotels. There were no curtains in the room. All the paintwork on the internal doors was chipped, and overall, the room was dirty and looked like it had just been vacated.

I asked the staff at reception if they had another room, as the one offered was in such a state, but they stated that was all they had.
I then tried to call Cosmos to complain and to get us other accommodation that was on a par with the original hotel. All calls were made on a mobile phone to England, so the cost was very high. They stated they would get back to me. I informed the hotels staff what I thought of the hotel, and whilst there, several other people heard my complaints, and they said their rooms was as bad. They had stayed because they had young children with them, and could not go off and look for somewhere else at short notice.

I found another hotel just yards from the original hotel I had booked. It was very clean and tidy, and it was rated 2 stars. They had rooms to spare. We also enquired at several other hotels along the sea front, and we found they had accommodation as well. It appears that Cosmos did not try very hard to sort out the mess they had got us into.

We spent 5 days in Calella and not once did Cosmos call me.
