Good Points

Up to 12 hours battery life, mine lasted nearly 16 hours before recharge

Better than average playback quality


Bad Points

No way to replace battery without contacting Apple at $59
It's iTunes to download music or nothing else. Although I understand back door methods do exist
Horrible sliding power switch


General Comments

I got mine later than most. I paid $30 for mine on Ebay for a brand new 512Mb shuffle, because the new "mini" shuffle comes out 10/31/06.

In the past I've had Creative's MuVo and a couple of other varieties I can't remember. Most had reasonable, if not middling sound. This iPod really surprised me. Much better sound without muddy lows and screeching highs. Although the battery in the iPod is internal and not easily changed without going through Apple, my other units ate either AA or AAA batteries, and they intensely disliked NiMH batteries, disposing of the latter variety within a couple hours.

Other than the downside of the battery, the only problem is actually losing this sucker. It's so lightweight you can easily drop it and not know.

Final point - who designed the on/off switch? It must have been a woman with long nails because I sure can't operate the thing easily without nearly squeezing the life out of the case. I understand the new "mini" iPod MP3 player does away with this problem by using a better switch.
