Good Points

Very quick to send out "Welcome" letters.


Bad Points

Dreadful customer relations!


General Comments

I have been with A&L from before they took over Girobank. I recommended my husband switch from Abbey to A&L's Premier Direct Account and completed the application online. He received an official "Welcome" letter a few days later saying his application had been confirmed and requesting confirmation of ID. A few days after supplying this, he got an email (not a letter) stating that they had changed their minds and they could only offer him an ordinary current account. We sent customer services a rather curt letter telling them what they could do with it, and requesting that in future they should delay their "welcomes" until they have properly decided whether they want you as a customer or not. Sending an email immediately after telling you that you had been accepted wasn't acceptable customer relations either. They have sent all the current account PIN's now etc., but it has all been sent right back to them with "not wanted" scrawled on it. Seems you can pass all the requirements - excellent credit, perfect ID, acceptable salary etc., but still not be good enough for them.

I have banked with Alliance & Leicester for 25 years or so, and I am now looking to move my account elsewhere. I don't get any of the benefits despite my loyalty to them. I have been thoroughly disillusioned by the way they dealt with this.
