Starter's Review of Ruger 10/22 .22 LR

The Ruger 10/22 LR is about the finest .22 carbine available. Totally reliable, easy to operate, great 10-shot rotary magazine. The only negative is a lack of an automatic hold-open on the last shot. Otherwise a truly great rifle for beginners and experts alike.

Sorry I disagree about that feature, its the safest feature to not having the chamber stay open,
this way the breach closes and you can reload with a loaded mag and not have to reload one in chamber until your ready. If it stayed open then as soon as you insert a loaded magazine it will automatically load one round in the chamber, don't forget this rifle was not made for Combat so it doesn't need to be loaded real quick, it's for target shooting and small game hunting. I believe and like to think that Ruger knew what they were doing when they built this feature so that the breach stay's closed after last round. Its all about Safety.
I have the Stainless 10/22 for over 18 years, i've modified the trigger system and changed the hammering pin other then that its the best .22 caliber rifle ever made for the price, and very accurate all the way to 200 yards with CCI Stingers .22 LR.....

I do not agree with your analysis. If you wanted a loaded mag/empty chamber scenerio you could manually close the bolt BEFORE inserting the next magazine.

The Ruger 10/22 for all its merits has about the worst hold-open system of any .22 rifle. I cannot think of another .22 autoloader that does not incorporate a last shot hold-open. I stand by my original statement that the 10/22 would be a better gun with an automatic hold-open feature.

If you disagree then don't buy a Ruger Sturm 10/22 semi auto rifle ,if you have one sell and don't talk about it again ,your argument doesn't hold any water.
If Ruger thought it would be necessary to add that feature they would have done it,since its not there it doesn't need it, just like the saying "if it's not broken don't fix it"
Like I wrote on my Review I have fire almost 15,000 rounds and still have the same rifle and the only thing I have done to it is changed the hamer rod for a tune up kit ,
If you want to correct your BIG problem and will keep you from criticizing one of the best built .22
Then go to www.cabelas.com ,search for the 10/22 accessories and they have a kit with a magazine that will do what you want since it's SO IMPORTANT TO YOU.....

Again I state that the Ruger 10/22 would be a better gun if it included a last shot hold-open mechanism.

The fact that every other .22 autoloader on the market has just such a device shows its value and desirability.

The reason why Sturm Ruger (not Ruger Sturm, rookie) didn't include a hold open mechanism is because they could not get one to work with their rotary magazine.

There are kits out there that you can get the bolt to stay open after firing the last round. I know Cabella's carry them along with a special magazine needed for this to work.
