Good Points

Accommodation: Central location, spacious, peaceful, clean. Apartments are set around a lovely atrium which is planted with large lush greenery. Very pleasant pool area. Don't have to pay extra for air conditioning. Internet "cafe" (shop) next door.

Resort: Relaxed pace, plenty of good restaurants and bars, but nothing too loud or yobbish. Long stretch of beach very close by, with stunning sandy coves a bit further on. Beaches were fairly busy but not crowded. There is a local map/guide available for free from many of the local shops and bars, which is useful for finding your way around, and it advertises local restaurants with helpful descriptions and examples from their menus.

Location: A main road runs along the coast, making it easy to get around. There are 2 water parks and a marine zoo. Close to larger towns if you want to explore.

Bad Points

Accommodation: Very basic, quite dated. Pool area might be a bit crowded at busier times (we went in the last 2 weeks of June when it wasn't too busy).

Resort: Not good for snorkeling.

General Comments

We wanted somewhere peaceful and relaxing, but with enough bars and restaurants to keep us from getting bored, and Alvor turned out to be the perfect destination. We stayed at the Alvomar Apartments for 2 weeks as a couple. The apartments are seconds away from the village centre. Our apartment was basic, but clean and spacious, and the pool area was peaceful and relaxing - we spent a lot of time there. The village itself has lots of excellent restaurants and bars (we could have eaten at a different restaurant every night if we had wanted), and the locals were friendly. We had a fantastic day out at one of the water parks (Aqualand - cheap to get into if you get tickets from a tourist office, but stupidly overpriced food and drink), and hired a car for a few days and explored some of the towns along the coast. There is a main road that runs parallel to the coastline, so it's very easy to get around. The most stunning coved beaches are 15 or so minutes walk away, although there is a long stretch of beach that is closer. Alvor surpassed our expectations by a long way, and we can't recommend it highly enough.
