Overall Rating

4 stars
  • Value for money
    4 stars
  • Quality
    4.5 stars
Good Points

15" TFT, 512MB, 40GB MODEL AN ABSOLUTE MUST OVER THE 14" 256 MODEL.
2.4GHZ P4 PROCESSOR VERY EFFICIENT
VERY SEXY LAPTOP.
ABILITY TO RUN MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS SIMULTANIOUSLY WITHOUT FLINCHING.
4 USB PORTS

Bad Points

COOLING FAN COMES ON FREQUENTLY AND BECOMES A LITTLE ANNOYING.
ON BOARD SPEAKERS ARE WEAK. ADVISE THAT PACKARD BELL SURROUND SOUND SPEAKERS ARE PURCHASED (AROUND £20).
CDRW SPEED ON COPYING IS SLOW (x4)BUT GETS JOBS DONE FIRST TIME REGARDLESS OF WHATS GOING ON IN THE BACKGROUND.
STAND ALONE BATTERY LIFE ONLY 2 HOURS.

General Comments

In my opinion, laptops, like other electrical equipment, must not only perform well in all conceivable scenarios but must also look good. The IPOWER 5000 SERIES 1 satisfies on both counts. I spent 'weeks' visiting PC stores(often going AWOL to the annoyance of "the missus"!) and this was the unit that appealed most on price, functionality and cosmetic desirability.
Function wise it easily handles multiple task Window applications and sets up new software rapidly. On the internet,in conjunction with AOL broadband, its a joy for gaming, watching movies, transfer of data and processing of information.
I purchased the unit as a replacement for my 'ageing' desktop on a space benefit/mobilty wavelength. To date, its been a decision that I do not regret. The 15" screen is more than sufficient for viewing(using internet explorer, toolbar "view", "text size", the default internet text default size can be easily increased for your own comfort and screen resolution can be increased/decreased using Fn F6/F7) and the keyboard is responsive and gives a nice feel.
The advent of the Centrino processor should be monitored, but for those requiring a solid P4 laptop, save risking the break-up of your relationship and look no further!
