Zakir Hussain
Ancient Future, who claim a historic position in world music, offer a promising start in the style of Shakti's Natural Elements but soon lose their way getting diverted by synthetic gamelan, Dave Grusin calypso, turkish textures and lush quartet overtures.
Moments of eastern promise still linger but the bias seems misplaced with the predominance of western chordal structures, electric instrumentation and cheesy solos.
Alas, accomplished performances, with guest appearances from Zakir Hussain and a rare outing from him on kanjira, are not enough to force an identity on this album.
