Having had a fairly poor credit rating, I approached Car Credit UK, whose salesperson phoned back later to confirm that they could help. I drove to their premises arriving at about 11am where I was given a short test drive in my chosen car and was then kept waiting for most of the afternoon while they completed the paperwork. The price was about £700 more than the car was worth and the interest rate on the loan was high, but when you don't have access to high street finance, what choice do you have? I foolishly believed the salesperson when I was told that the car had been given a full check, came with a year's MOT and was covered by a mechanical breakdown warranty. In fact, the car had a short MOT and had obviously not been anywhere near a competent mechanic for some time. I spotted a couple of defects myself which they told me would be rectified; they were not. They arranged for an MOT test at a local garage, which was carried out in approximately 20 minutes and a certificate issued. I left wondering just how long it should take to properly carry out an MOT test and found out to my cost a couple of months later, when the front brake pads had to be replaced (I should have been advised that they were low as part of the "safety check" and also by the MOT examiner). Not long after that, the water pump failed and so it was back to the local (reputable) garage to have that replaced. Why didn't I claim against the warranty? Because I don't even think one exists, having asked for the relevant warranty booklet on three separate occasions and having my request ignored each time. This car has ended up costing me something like £2000 over the correct book price (overpriced by £700, high cost of finance, £700, repairs and rectification of faults, £600). I do not recommend this company. Oh, by the way, the car didn't have a tax disc either.
