General Comments

We used the American Express Travellers Cheque Card when we visited the states last year (2005) and found it to be an extremely efficient way of carrying large amounts of foreign currency without the fear of losing it. We found it easiest to withdraw money to last us 2 - 3 days at a time to minimise the charges that were applied for cash withdrawals, although a lot of shops (most shops that take AMEX credit cards) in the US will also accept the travellers cheque card, so you could also use it directly to make purchases.

We kept notes of how much we had withdrawn, so we had a rough idea of our balance on a daily basis, but we did phone customer services towards the end of our holiday to ensure that we weren't way off. It would be helpful if you could check the balance at a cashpoint, although all you need to do is find an internet cafe and log on to check the balance.

Overall, I was initially sceptical that it would be accepted by ATM's or businesses, but this proved to be unfounded, and we are using it again this year.
