Good Points

Power (D4D engine), reliability, practicality, comfort, poise, presence, advantagious viewpoint, accommodation, off road ability. Even the missus can drive it! It's not a Land Rover!

Bad Points

Brakes could do with uprating! Could do with more storage around driver passenger for things like glasses, sunglasses etc)

General Comments

I've wanted one all my working life but could never justify it, because it's easy to get the impression that it's going to cost an arm and a leg to run from tests and reports, and that always put me off. It doesn't. Yes it's heavy, and there's going to be a fuel penalty as a result, but the D4D engine pulls strongly from tick over and there's no need to rev it through the rev range. It's a case of "horses for courses"! Of course you'll get better mpg from a moped, but have you ever tried off-roading with 5 people and luggage on a moped? No! I didn't think so! The Toyota Landcruiser is a big strong 8 seater 4X4, with a powerful engine that's built to last and go anywhere reliably and in comfort. It's quite capable of returning a very respectable 30 mpg at legal speeds and is very comfortable at motorway speeds with bags of power/torque available when you need it. For your money, you get a large superbly built safe vehicle that's practical and fun to own. And yes! It costs more than a moped to run!

I can honestly say that it's the most complete vehicle I've owned and love it. It's been 100% reliable and fun to own. I considered the Land Rover TD5, but got it stuck on a wet grass verge while testing it! I had to be recovered by the AA in a Vauxhall Fronterra! How embarrassing! The Td5 engine was also noisy and like a slug on sleeping pills compared to the D4D engine. I have no regrets and am already looking at the new one.

Driven sensibly what do you realisticaly get to the gallon with a SWB d4d colarado. I need something to do 30k year but also to tow a horse box. Is it comfortable on long journeys?

You can change the brake pads for EBC Green Stuff pads (7000 series is best) which improve the braking.
