Good Points

Attractive dogs, make good guard dogs and are highly intelligent.

Bad Points

Not for the first time owner, can be aggressive if not socialised properly.

General Comments

These are large, impressive dogs that require a lot of exercise! The Japanese Akita were used as fighting dogs, and the American Akita, who is much larger and 'bear-like' than the Japanese Akita arrived by breeding the original Japanese Akita with a lot of large guard dogs in the USA.

Therefore, the Akita is in general an aggressive breed, but with the right upbringing, can become a well loved and loyal member of the family.

It is VITAL that you seek out a responsible, kennel club registered breeder, do not ever buy from backyard breeders who just so happened to have a male and female Akita. This goes for all animals, but in particular with dogs like Akita's as it is important that their parents have good temperaments and are healthy. Akita's are long-lived breeds and can live over 12 years, but there are some lines which live noticeably shorted lives, hence the importance to find a good breeder!

They are prone to hip dysplasia being a large breed, so Akita parents should be screened before breeding, when at the breeders you should ask what the hip scores are like, again, a reputable breeder will screen all their dogs!

They are a highly intelligent dog, and are rather independent and tend to want to be top dog in the family, highlighting the fact this is not a dog for the novice dog owner! They do not do well with being hit or shouted at, careful training is needed and you should seek much advise from breeders, vets and Akita club websites about training Akita's!

Like mentioned above, they shouldn't be trusted around strange dogs or children, ever! No exceptions! I know of an Akita which has nearly ripped two dogs apart, one of them, my friend's dog, due to total ignorance by the both the backyard breeder and novice owner.
For this reason, letting them off the leash is not a good idea.

Please, if you want this dog just because it looks impressive, powerful and is not a common site, or whatever, look elsewhere, these are not the dogs for you!
