Many branches and cash machines.
High street staff are usually very friendly and helpful. I set up an account with them about 10 years ago because of their informality.
Sold off their credit card facilities to MBNA (a company I have tried to avoid for years because of the junk mail).
Customer services moved to the other side of the world where neither I, nor the operator can understand what each other is saying via their Blue Peter inspired phone system.
Approximately two separate items of junk mail from them per week, including close to 200 credit card cheques over the last 4 years.
The final straw came two months ago when I tried to transfer some money abroad for shares. After two hours, getting through to the right department in Bradford, the money was transferred 11 days late. I was still charged £25, and I potentially nearly lost thousands if it weren't for the kind flexibility of the French Company I was transferring to.
If you like to pass the time of day ringing 0845 numbers and listening to "press one to talk to us about credit cards... two to talk to someone on the moon...." then Abbey is the account for you. If you collect paper for the local scouts group, then you won't even have to leave your home to collect it. Several bag loads will be delivered directly to you over a few weeks. They used to be a genuine local service, which has since sold out at the obvious expense to the customer. A great shame. I have now moved to another bank.
