Good Points

As before, wonderful staff, but they are being let down by the hotel. This was my second visit this year and I was mortified at the decline in a few months. Off-season or not, this was for the first three weeks hell.

Bad Points

The food was boring and for three weeks was never hot enough to be safe. The menu was lacklustre and the dishes on the menu bore no resemblance to what was on the plate. The Italian restaurant should be avoided.

General Comments

It is such a great shame that a lovely location is let down by lack of effort, complacency and some heads of staff who are out of touch with what is expected for the money spent. There are cheaper and better hotels around so competition could soon destroy this hotel's rating which is at best 3*.
I do not agree with the "This is Africa" excuse as Leopard Beach and Leisure Lodge do better for less money.
There was not even a radio in the bedrooms at Southern Palms. The entertainment is more holiday camp than luxury hotel (Bingo? Please! Not on the Indian Ocean!), so unless they pull up their socks very quickly then I must say avoid this hotel this year. My apologies to the staff as it is their jobs at risk and they are wonderful, but I have to write what I find to be true.
Yes, you will find people who thought the food was good and I do not want to denigrate them, but I spent a lifetime in luxury hotels worldwide as a caterer and chef and I have also stayed in some very bad ones so I feel I can speak with authority.
I am going back to Kenya again in December and I will pop into the Palms to see how they are doing, but I will stay at Leisure Lodge.
