General Comments
I bought the Peugeot 306 2.0 XSi car cos my insurance had gone down and wanted something with a bit of grunt. So far I have to say the 306 has done me well. Puts a lot of cars to shame and sounds great past 4 thousand revs. To be honest I did expect a bit more performance for a 2 ltr but it isn't brand new. Couple of problems I have one the speedo seems to stop working when it feels like it. Plus it stalls itself from time to time, I took it to the garage and they haven't got a clue what's wrong with it. No one who has any idea there input would be most appreciated.

My 306 xsi had a similar problem cutting out except that the person I bought it from had tried to hide it by adjusting the idle speed so that it would rev higher when idling. This meant that the revs would dip and rise at standstill. I have read some reviews on the internet which suggested it could have been a few things. The most common was the isc valve (idle speed control valve - otherwise known as the stepper motor) I bought a new one from German and swedish car parts (new forest enterprise centre rushington rdbt - as you're from southampton) for the best part of £100. Then found out that the icu (computer thingy) had to be re-set, got a garage to do it for about £40 - and it's been fine ever since!. The garage did clean the throttle body as well, which also apparently adds to the problem. The unit itself was easy to get at, and you only have to remove 2x star drive bolts and unplug to remove it. Have also read other articles by peolpe claiming to be ripped off by Peugeot main dealers charging to replace the entire throttle body which didn't solve the problem. In hindsight it would have been cheaper for me to get a 2nd hand isc valve from another 306 - try silverlake autoparts. Hope this helps.

I have 2001 Peugeot 306 1.8i XS and I have had the problem. Took it to a local Peugeot dealer thinking I could trust them, and what a mistake! They charged me a £100, and I still had the problem after I picked the car up. When returning to the garage they offered to look at it again, at yet another charge and no guarantees of fixing the problem. I read up on the net and realised that a lot of 306's suffer from this problem, but few were recalled - only 1998 models. So most owners are forced to fix a known problem themselves. I bought mine for £65 from a dealer and did it myself. This job is a bit tricky, so I would have it done by a garage if you're not confident. I have since seen them on EBay for £35 - if you're after a bargain.

on 28th Oct 2006Well, I've since taken my Peugeot 306 to a Peugeot dealer, and they kept telling me what it might be. I was not prepared to pay upwards of £200 for just a maybe, so I've since got rid of it. Glad to see the back of it now. It annoys me that Peugeot would sell a car with a known problem and not even know how to fix it.
