General Comments

After being with the Halifax for the last 10 years and waiting for 7 days for cheques to clear, and after being issued with a Visa Electron card that is accepted nowhere and is useless, I decided to open a full current account. I applied online and was accepted, and I was given all the details; sort code and account number etc., and told to visit my local branch with the relevant documentation to prove my ID and earnings.

I took this paperwork to the branch as instructed to do so. Upon my first visit I was informed that I had to wait for a letter to confirm the account. I came home and contacted the head office, to be told that it was incorrect and to return to the branch the next day. This I did.

I was asked to see a personal adviser and told that the account had now been withdrawn on my instructions, and that I had to contact their head office. 40 minutes later I was told to reapply in the branch as there was nothing more they could do over the telephone.

I sat with a personal adviser for nearly three hours. I had a personal review and was talked into home contents insurance. Leading me to believe the account was completed, in the end I was told the account had been referred, and I would have to wait for 48 hours for a decision.

4 days later they contacted me and told me that the account had been declined as I had just opened another account with them. The personal adviser was already aware of the withdrawn account. So I don't know?!

They passed me back and forth from head office to the branch, and the last thing I heard was that the branch would appeal the decision, but nobody has informed me of anything.

I was given a list of excuses why the first account was cancelled, along with a list of reasons why they declined the second account (all guesses). They told me to contact a company called Experian to get a copy of my credit report, as it was this company that had declined my account. I paid £2.50 for this report, and it has come back clear, as I expected.

I walked into Natwest and I was in there for 10 minutes. They offered me a full current account with both credit and debit card, and I am now happily using them.

I should have known better than to go to the Halifax given the past problems I had with the existing account. 7 days for cheques to clear! I paid £12.00 for express clear, and they lost the cheque. It took me three weeks to get the funds clear, as I had to prove the cheque had been lost and not cashed.
