Small and Compact, Excellent Quality, All the functions of a standard DVD player.
Speakers are quiet, Battery is heavier than unit.
The Naiko N-888 offers everything you can possibly need for a powerful DVD experience. For a little more than the price of a normal full-sized DVD player, you get all the features of a standard DVD player in a compact unit.
The 16:9 format screen is 5 and a half inches wide, and offers fantastic quality for it's size. The Picture can be changed from 16:9 to 4:3 at the press of a button, so no more stretching the image on non-widescreen disks.
The Stereo speakers located underneith the screen are a bit quiet for my liking, and are hard to hear over the noise of a train or heavy traffic. But the unit comes supplied with a pair of earphones which offer great sound, and stop you from annoying fellow passengers.
The unit has Audio/Video ports on the side, which allows it to be plugged into any AV-capable TV, or a Scart socket with an adapter (not supplied) and use it as a normal DVD player. At the flick of a switch you can switch the ports to "AV-in" and plug in a portable games system such as the Nintendo Gamecube, without the need to buy a seperate portable monitor for it. It also has an S-Video out port.
Not only does it play DVDs, but it also plays regular CDs and MP3s burnt onto a CD-R. It's also multi-regional, a switch on the side allows you to play either PAL or NTSC disks, which means you can take it abroad with you and play any-region disk.
The Battery supplied clips onto the back of the unit, and fully charged offers 3-hours of continuous watching. It takes aproximately 5 hours to charge fully.
The unit is shipped with an AC/DC adapter, which allows you to plug it into the mains and not waste the battery (the same cable is used to recharge the removable battery pack). It is also supplied with an adapter for a cigarette lighter, so you can easily power it in a car or boat.
The Battery is quite heavy (heavier than the unit, in fact) but doesn't present any major problems. The unit is also supplied with a Naiko PRM-100 credit-card sized remote control, offering zoom functions, audio options, subtitles and more. Basically, everything you'll find on a full-sized remote for a normal DVD player.
I bought mine in Safeway for £250 and regularly use it on long-distance rail journies to work, the three-hour battery allows me to watch a full-length movie (sometimes even two, depending on the legth) before running out, and has made the four-and-a-half hour trip from Newcastle to Aberdeen much more pleasent.
Anyone who travels a lot will find the N-888 a godsend, ideal for use on long distance car journies (don't watch it while driving though ;), trains, boatrides and aircraft. I would recommend this to anyone who gets bored easily on such journies.
