I took four children aged between 5 and 11 to Pontins in Southport, and they loved it. The entertainment is aimed at younger children; like Captain Crocs theatre with uncle Jeff, then the Blue Coats do party time until about 10.30. The kids loved the pool, and in the little pool they had cups that poured water on them. They had little slides, but they enjoyed that as well. We didn't go in the arcade as they were not interested. You can play mini golf for free too.
If you haven't got a car the bus stop is half a mile up the road, so you can't really get anywhere. The budget chalets are basic, but we only paid £9.50 from Sun Holidays, so we didn't care. We only used it as a base really.
The sea takes ages to get to, and my niece said she felt like she was in the desert looking for water, but the next day we went the opposite way and found a lake where the kids fed the ducks, and we went on a little nature walk. They loved it.
All in all, we all enjoyed it, but I wouldn't go again as I think once you have been, there wouldn't be much to do the second time around.
