Good Points

Lower cost complaints responded quickly and efficiently at all stages. Their fee was 14.5% plus VAT, which seemed fair in relation to other charges I had heard of. The result was quicker than I expected. I first contacted the company in mid April, and my compensation money of just over £5,000 was in my account by 22 June.


Bad Points

No bad points, although as my original endowment mortgage had been arranged through an adviser working in an estate agent which had been taken over, and as that adviser seemed to be an independent financial adviser, Lower Cost Complaints did ask for an upfront fee of £116. This bothered me at first, but they responded with a convincingly honest statement of my chances of success, and I had no sense of being put on the back burner because I had a more complicated case. The upfront fee was deducted from the amount I eventually owed them.


General Comments

Lower Cost Complaints work entirely through email and post, though they do have a phone number. However, this email system worked well. Responses were quick, and it felt as comfortable as talking on the phone, and it was less frustrating than some attempts to get through on the phone can be these days. I had first taken out my endowment mortgage in 1988 through an estate agent which had been taken over. I kept the same policy, but changed mortgage in 1994. These complications were defeating me, though I had made an attempt to gain compensation myself. My view is that even though I will still have a significant shortfall, at least I've got £5,000 more than the zero pounds I was getting with my own efforts.
