No charge for using your cards abroad
You need a very high credit rating to have a basic DEBIT card
The e-banking site is error-prone, and errors are charged at 30GBP
If you open an ISA they give you a little paper book
If you bring a cheque in today, on the Nationwide online website you will see a transaction with today's date and a running balance next to it. So you are led to think you have that money now. If you try to move that money, the system will reject and refund the money the day after, and then charge you 30GBP for insufficient balance in the process!!!
Above the running balance column there are actually two numbers: an account balance and an available balance. If you move more than the available balance, the system charges you 30GBP!! So the system can actually compute and print the little number on the web page, but it is not capable of simply rejecting a transaction if you try to move more than the available balance. What it CAN do is charge you 30 POUNDS STERLING (mind you, not 2 or 3 pounds, but THIRTY!!) as soon as you make a mistake!
Then you have to wait 15 minutes in the queue to the customer care line to beg somebody to remove the charge because it was an honest mistake!
Last but by no means least, I moved to the UK 8 months ago so I do not have a lot of trackable credit history, but I do make a decent living and have always paid my bills on time. However, knowing my employer, seeing my payslip, and receiving my salary is not enough for Nationwide to see that I am indeed worthy of their DEBIT card!
I'll spare you the story of how they actually give you a little paper book if you open an ISA account!!! Do those people know the year is 2006 AD?
