graeme williams's Review of Dial Direct Car Insurance

Good Points

Fairly easy to take up offer of insurance, and apparently cheap.

Bad Points

Substantial increase in premium each year, despite no claims. If you change car there is hefty price to pay, and if you cancel your insurance during cover they will not refund the premium paid.

General Comments

I am 50 years old, and I have been driving since I was 17 years old. I have been on my own insurance for 30 years and I have never had a claim. I insured a SEAT with Direct Dial car insurance in September 2003. The premium shot up in September 2004 and again in September 2005. I sold the SEAT (value £5,500) in June 2006 and I bought a Vauxhall (value £2,000). When I contacted Dial Direct to swap cover they said that I had to pay an additional £79 for cover to September (12 weeks). I suggested that it would be better to have my premium for the remaining period refunded. The sales person said "you need to read the small print. You will not get any of your premium returned". I asked what would be the annual premium for comprehensive cover on the Vauxhall, and the answer was £686. I then phoned Saga and the same cover was £565. My advice is go elsewhere for your car insurance, especially if you are likely to change your car. Lord knows what would have happened if I had done something out of the ordinary such as make a claim. I would probably be referred back to the small print.

I was given a quote of £380 for either of two cars with 1.7 engines. A month later when I phoned again, Direct Dial they told me it was now £490 for third party. Comprehensive car insurance was £550 somewhere else. It seems that the prices are made up as they go along, and if one company is making it all up, so are all of them. The maximum quote I got was £2000 for third party. It is one weird industry, and everything is set up for them to make money. Joe public takes it on the chin like a sucker.
