Good Points

The caravan was situated near a second entrance, so we didn't have to drive through the main entrance.

Bad Points

The view of a landfill site in the next field was an eyesore.
Dirty caravan.

General Comments

Our caravan at Combe Haven Holiday Park was very dirty. Our baby crawled across the floor ONCE and his hands were wrapped in a variety of hair which we had to unravel. We asked for a vacuum cleaner and were greeted with "what for? We said we had dropped something to avoid a discussion about it. We vacuumed it ourselves, but still could not remove all of the hair from the carpet. (There should be at least a carpet sweeper in each one).

The toilet room was carpeted and smelled like a mens urinal at Paddington Station. We had the window open all week and it was overpowering.

The smell of stale smoke never left the caravan all week, even with the windows in all the rooms being left open.

   The landfill site at Pebsham is visible from Combe Haven. However, we have an agreement with the local council that during the period from March to November every year they do no works to this area. Over the past few years this has worked incredibly successfully. And whilst in the past it would have been possible to see rubbish (although the landfill is so far away it is impossible to see anything in any detail), this area is now not used when the Park is open. In addition, the whole area is landscaped and turfed at the start of each year, and so simply looks like a hill. There is no odour from the landfill on the Park, and I am sure the vast majority of our guests do not even know what it is. As far as I am aware, only two guests have commented upon it at Guest Services this year. My gut reaction would be to ask you "if this really spoilt your holiday enjoyment?" as feedback from other customers shows that since the improvements have been made in recent years that it does not.
   
   I am sorry that you were not happy with the cleanliness of your caravan. In 2006 we have brought all accommodation cleaning "in house" rather than using contractors, and this has meant that we have been able to greatly raise standards. Whilst I cannot dispute that this regrettable incident happened to you, again we do require feedback at the time. I note your comments about not wishing to tell the Guest Services Assistant why you wanted a hoover, but had you told them the real reason then they would have been extremely apologetic, and would have sent a cleaner and a cleaning supervisor around to your accommodation immediately to rectify any and all problems that you had.
   
   With regards to the toilet floor, unfortunately little accidents do happen, and had our cleaning team been aware then they would have shampooed the carpets for you there and then. All of our holiday homes are checked after being cleaned, and all issues are resolved before the guest checks in. I can simply assume in this case that this was not noticed, as the industrial cleaning products that we use are stronger than what you would buy in a supermarket, and as such are not perfumed in the same way. The toilet cleaner in particular has a smell of ammonia, which can be confused for urine, although the odour disappears once the toilet has been flushed. In fact some guests tell us they like the smell and to see the cleaning product in the toilet as it re-assures them that we are thorough.
   
   Unfortunately, we do not have no smoking caravans, as unlike a hotel or guest house this is totally impractical to police. Whilst hotels have smoke detectors which alert the management if someone is smoking in a room, our units are all fitted as standard with normal domestic smoke alarms. Therefore, this cannot be heard from the housekeeping office. Whilst our accommodation is not no smoking, the very vast majority of customers who smoke do have the courtesy to smoke outside or have the door open. Again, we have an industrial strength air neutraliser called Smoke Screen, which is much more effective than similar household products available in a supermarket. Had our cleaning team been aware of your complaint then they would have resolved this for you in a very prompt manner.

   Thank you Combe Haven for the return comments. However, the customer service team on site were not very approachable. Our request to have a vacuum cleaner, which should not be necessary upon arrival if the accomodation had been cleaned thoroughly, were greeted with a negative attitude. So any further explanation as to why we needed it was absolutely pointless.
   As for the landfill site, from our photo you can clearly see a rubbish lorry on the top which later emptied it's load in clear view. We do have more photo's and video footage of this.
   I am most disappointed with Havens response to these comments. As a paying guest I was expecting to have a half decent holiday in clean accomodation. I expect a prompt, professional and polite service.
