I have been with this bank for over ten years and have always recommended them to friends. However, I am fuming at the moment.
I have today received a letter stating that they have taken a 25 quid charge from my account because there wasn't enough in to pay a cheque for 27 quid. I had anticipated this and paid £100 from another account the same day, which was credited to my account instantly. When I rang them they said the money has to be in the day before it is due to go out! Why? I queried this, saying it was like me telling my students that they have to turn up the day before an exam in order to pass the exam. The 'advisor' was having none of this. I asked about what would have happened if I had taken 100 pounds in cash to the bank that day, and they said it would have been the same. Even though the money was physically there. They maintain the right to charge. Fuming? Not half.
What a shame Alliance & Leicester can't use common sense to keep a previously happy customer. Obviously I don't go overdrawn enough for them to make any money out of me.
