General Comments

My husband, myself and our 10month old baby recently moved into our new home. I had always wanted a 5 hob cooker with splashback and chimney, and as Comet had an offer on the Elba C96DF, we decided to get one.

Everything was going fine with the cooker until 2 weeks ago. I was setting the table for dinner when I heard a huge explosion like a bomb coming from the kitchen. I was amazed to find that the glass door of the cooker had exploded. The impact was so huge, that glass flew into our hall and up to the front door. Currys (Harlow) are not accepting responsibility and neither are Elba. I have been trying to sort this out for the last 2 weeks, but I have been passed around from person to person! An engineer came out to inspect the damage and has said he has no idea what has caused the explosion, but said "If I had to guess, I would say that there was a crack in the glass to start with". I know for a fact that there was no crack, and I am being told that Currys will replace the glass on the door.

No one is interested in finding out what happened and not one person has said "sorry". If myself or my husband had been in the kitchen or hallway whilst the door exploded, it would have caused some serious damage. I do not want a replacement. I want a new oven and NOT the same make, but the Curry's manager really does not care that this could happen again and has no interest whatsoever in finding the reason.

For the last 2 weeks we have lived on microwave food and probably will be for another few weeks or months!

I found this review helpful because...my oven just exploded last night. i agree we should contact the manufacturers and get them to find out why this keeps happening.

How can a company not be concerned about an oven that explodes?!! Why don't you contact Watchdog to see if this is a common problem?

With regard to Currys, I am witness to their lack of service, as the store in New Malden is quite something else!

It is now 5 months since my oven door exploded.
After spending a stupid amount of money on phone calls to get the problem sorted, I spoke to the manager of Elba who told me, along with consumer direct, that I was in my rights to ask for a refund on my faulty Cooker, and that it was down to the Manager at Currys to issue the refund.

I went to the Harlow store to speak to the Manager, who refused to give me a refund.

I ended up with no choice but to have the glass replaced. This has left me too worried to use my oven, and as I worked as a chef before having my baby, cooking is something I am now too scared to do in my own home.

Currys poor customer service has left them losing customers with 3 people I know. In the last two months my parents have purchased a dishwasher, oven, kettle and freezer, and both my brothers have just moved into new homes and needed EVERYTHING needed for a kitchen, TV's, DVD players and lots more. OK, Currys may feel they do not need to worry about losing just a few customers, but with the amount of money they have just lost to their rivals, I think they should think twice about their customer care.

I have had the same explosion of my glass door this weekend...28th October. My cooker is 17 months old and is also the Elba C96DF model. I could not believe the force that it went off with. The glass was everywhere. Thank goodness my 2 year old grandson was not in the area at the time. We have not been in touch with anyone yet with it being the weekend, but we will be looking for some answers from either Currys or Elba. Is this a common problem? I would like to know. Has anyone else experienced this? I am really not happy that a £400 cooker has gone this way.
