Cadbury Twirl Review

Scrumy, delicious, and a good hit of chocolate.

Calories! The price has gone up and it seems a bit expensive lately.

Our vending machine at work has a very strange mind. Rarely does it allow us to get at the same make of chocolate bar two days running. It likes to store all the crisps and sweets in a pretty pattern. No doubt there is a logical reason for this, but to a stressed chocoholic this can be extremely maddening. Imagine needing a chocolate fix only to find that whilst you can see row after row of delicious calming Cadbury's and Nestle's, the only things you can get at are those horrible fruit or cereal bars, or even worse; a gap where there should be food! In this situation the only thing to do (other than curse, kick the machine and walk off in a huff) is to pay twice; once for either fresh air or something you don't like, and then again for the chocolate. It depends on how badly you need it I guess. And if you are fortunate enough to find anything in the depths that you like, chances are the metal spiral will turn and your longed for sweetmeat will sit on the edge, hovering in mid-air and refusing to drop. If you are having a lucky moment, a big beefy engineer will be within hailing distance and he will come over and get all macho and lift the machine and give it a good shake. So you can see how hard it is round here to get a bit of choccy?!

Well, this afternoon I decided to risk the trip down the long, cold spooky corridor just on the off chance that today might be my lucky day. And yes! There, right at the front, almost hiding the cereal bars was a lovely shiny packet of Cadbury's Twirl. So I spent the next five minutes feeding in all my loose coppers to get my forty pence fix.

Our vending machine is not only psychotic, but also chilled, which is nice as it means by the time I walk back to my desk my chocolate bar has not actually melted into a pool of mush in my hand.

Back at my desk I find I am trembling with desire, but as I only had enough spare change for one bar, I decide to really linger and enjoy my confectionery. The wrapper is a shiny purple foil (the corporate colour of Cadbury's) with the word Twirl emblazoned in large yellow (the other corporate colour?) letters edged with red. The side informs me that this is "The Intense chocolate Hit". I do miss the old fashioned cellophane style wrappers with less advertising, as this kind of in your face branding just annoys me - I long for the good old days when Cadbury's advertised their flakes with a pretty lady lolling around a meadow.

So, after sneering at the garish wrapper, I tear the corner off the wrapper of my extravagance of the day. Fortunately for my temper, the wrapper tears very easily, no tugging, splitting or spillage. The smell is the first thing I notice; I could cheerfully sit for hours just inhaling the luscious aroma of Cadbury's chocolate that emanates from the depths of the purple foil, but people in the office are starting to give me really weird looks.

Inside are two sticks of uneven chocolate. This is basically a pair of covered flakes, and that is just how it looks - like a couple of flakes dipped in chocolate. This makes it much easier to eat at work than a standard flake; much less spillage on the keyboard and down the front of my suit.

Unable to hold back any longer I start to bite the end off one stick. The flavour really is close to being an intense hit. The chocolate melts over my tongue releasing creamy smells and tastes almost, but not quite, reminiscent of bananas. As this subsides, a deeper, more cocoa flavour takes it place, my mouth is filled with the scent and taste of the very familiar comforting Cadbury's of my youth. The bitten stick is very pretty to look at; delicate ribbony folds of a pale brown chocolate wrapped in a smooth coating of yet more chocolate.

As I finish the first stick I notice my mouth is watering, yet I feel thirsty. The perfect accompaniment to this bar is chilled water; this washes down any slight stickiness without taking away the taste.

Well, the two bars naturally don't last very long at all, but the effect is definitely satisfying; I feel like I have definitely had a decent amount of chocolate. I should imagine that one of these in a day would be enough for the average consumer. Even a chocoholic would be able to manage on just one at a push, as although this is not a rich sweet the strength of the chocolate is enough to last quite a while. Personally I could eat quite a few if given the chance!

For dieters these little temptations come in at 115 calories per finger - quite a lot really, but if you can manage to stick to only one finger then they do give quite good value for calories. Go on give it a twirl!!

  Fantastic review!, I like Twirls alot, for me they are like a next generation Wispa, good quality choclate but a nicer finish in my opinion.
