Good Points

Aesthetically the Jazz is one of the best looking basses out there - classic lines, the Fender look, the cutaway body and long scale neck - this model is surprisingly affordable and playable too complete with the sound of its more expensive US / Japan flagship models

Bad Points

The Mexican Jazz obviously has to cut corners to come in cheap - so hardware and electronics may be slightly below full spec as may well be the overall construction - not that you can tell !

General Comments

I wanted a bass to use in the studio, but really wanted the USA model - I couldn't afford it and managed to pick the Mex Jazz (4-String) for under £400 including gig bag from a small shop in Bury that even price matched a web price - brilliant - it's definitely worth shopping around and haggling. It's great to play and definitely has the Jazz sound - For novices and giggers, this is a great stepping stone up to your first 'proper' bass or as a second / back up.

Once you settle on a final purchase of probably £7-900 for your main instrument (maybe more !) this will make you look and sound good and provide a reliable full scale tool..you may even buy the more expensive version!

I'm looking to buy my husband a Fender Jazz Bass for Christmas as he's been coveting one for years. Not being a bassist (I'm learning the guitar and have only bought my first acoustic), I'm not sure what to look for in the specific guitar I buy. The budget is around £400. Are there any quirks I should be aware of or issues with the tone, etc.?
