Entertaining band interplay; tasteful selection of covers; superior jazz musicianship.
The Reggie Buie Trio's "The First Time" (http://www.reggiebuie.com) is a solid collection of jazz songs that are lively and expertly played. The remarkable cover of "Betcha, By Golly Wow" is a truly amazing piece, given a melancholic jazz treatment that offers an emotional rush when the vocals slide in.
Much of the record is propelled by Buie's piano playing, and it perfectly captures the emotions of the songs, from joy ("Nica's Dream") to sentimental reflection ("Georgia").
On a technical level, this is a top-notch work; however, its likeable nature will reel in people of all ages and backgrounds.
