Good Points

When I first joined Orange in about 2000 they had excellent coverage and represented good value for money. Having made a one off payment of £180 for their first HTC SPV MS Windows smartphone a few years later, I was disappointed with the quality of the handset, but to Orange's credit they replaced it whenever it broke, and upgraded it later with much better versions pretty much as soon as they became available. The last windows mobile handset I had with them was excellent, and it was all from free upgrades on the back of that one first large payment. They did at one point tell me that I was flagged as a "priority customer", so I think that helped. The Orange care insurance is second-to-none. You call them to say your phone is broken and a new one is with you within 24 hours.


Bad Points

I was a customer for over five years, and the quality of the signal to my phone deteriorated hugely in that time. They were better than Vodafone for signal in Cambridge when I first joined, but last year (living in the same area) I had to put my phone outside the window of my flat on a hands free kit to get a usable signal. Six months ago I moved to central London and had to do the same. Neither city is what you'd describe as "the back of beyond" so you'd expect a mobile to work from the inside of a flat. I don't know why, but the network infrastructure seems to have gone backwards, and the signal strength generally is absolutely shocking. It's even worse than the "one to no-one" phone I had before. I had several different handsets so it's not a hardware fault; that's just how Orange are these days. I've now changed my main contact number to my work O2 Blackberry, and now get an excellent signal wherever I go - I can't recommend them enough.


General Comments

Orange used to be great - but not these days. The poor signal wherever I go (and I travel in the UK lots and noticed it pretty much everywhere) verges on unusable. Seriously, this once excellent mobile phone provider has gone to the dogs.
