Great for young families with young kids, and good to go to with extended families or groups.
Expensive
Poor food
My family and I went to Center Parcs Elveden forest last year, and we have a two year old child. Our accommodation was good. It was spacious and located off the main forest road, which meant it was always nice and quiet. Cars are not allowed in during the week, and you either walk to the main centre, or you can hire one of the bikes from them. Many people bring their own bikes, but the ones provided by Center Parcs are adequate.
It is a beautiful setting, and there are good walks to be had within the parc. The layout though, is designed to keep people within the confines of the parc.
There are plenty of activities to keep everyone busy, including outdoor pursuits such as rock climbing and boating, or tennis, badmington etc., from the indoor leisure centre.
Child-care is available, but do be warned that it is expensive, and payment has to be made per child, so that families with three or more children wanting care for half a day, do end up paying 'through their noses'. The activities are also expensive, so expect to have limits on what you would like to do.
There is a central area where all the restaurants are located, and the food is quite average. The kitchens cannot be seen, and it was my suspicion that each 'dining area' was actually served by the same kitchen. Customers are under the impression that they are at an open-plan Italian, or an open-plan Indian, but I did not believe that this was the case. The food was not extortionate, but neither was it cheap. All the accommodation, to my knowledge, is self-catering, so bring additional food is my advice.
The staff were very good, each person being very helpful and pleasant without exception. Our hairdryer caught fire (which is a bit off-putting, as you have to wonder how often they check these things - the hairdryer actually belonged to them), but they were very efficient in replacing it.
Center Parcs is worth a stay, in particular for young families who are not cash strapped - it is a refreshing and relaxing environment, but holiday makers should be under no doubt that the organisation is there to make money.
