Good Points

Very friendly staff; no hassle for tips etc., and always willing to provide an individual service.
African versions of whisky gin etc., which were respectable, and with a mixer, perfectly adequate.

Bad Points

Some guests treat staff as they used to in the bad old days of colonialism.
Some odours from sewage treatment, but not enough or often enough to deter from staying there (all hotels have same).
Safety deposit box in room is an additional charge.
Salt water in the shower is OK, but no hot water in the hand basin, which does making shaving a pain.

General Comments

The food at the Diani Beach Southern Palms, while copious, needs upgrading. Perhaps the chef has gotten a little jaded. Then again, he is a very pleasant chap, so it is hard to complain too strongly (unless like me you're from the trade). The entire hotel is however kept spotlessly clean. Laundry takes 2 days, but again, a first class service.

Considering it is not a "party" hotel, the entertainment is good.

Despite its faults, I am going back for a month this year in June/July, and again in December. I can recommend this hotel as a good holiday destination, but would hope visitors would go outside the walls and meet the Kenyan people; despite the abject poverty, they will always greet you with a smile, and with the correct attitude towards them and no ostentatious display of your wealth, you have nothing to fear. I went everywhere in shanty towns etc., and not once was I threatened or mugged etc. Common sense is all you need, and a friendly but not condescending nature.
