I have used Alamo car hire in Florida, and found that in Orlando International, Sanford and Tampa, the wait to collect was unbelievable (almost a three hour wait in Tampa).
It seems that most UK tour operators and online car hire companies use Alamo because they are cheap, so there are always huge queues that take ages to process because the staff are intent on selling upgrades, extra insurances, and anything else they can make more money on.
What infuriates me most is the insistence that unless you have pre-purchased an upgraded package (including 1 tank of fuel and extra drivers) you must prepay an extortionate amount of money for fuel. I usually travel alone and for three weeks, so the extra cost of the gold package is costly when all I want is a fair fuel deal. My last experience with Alamo I was told I had to pay $28 for a tank of petrol in an economy car that I know costs $12 to fill. There is nothing in the UK contract that forewarns of this.
Last visit I used Avis - booking with them online directly. What a difference. The staff were helpful, not pushy in any way, the car was great, and before I left the UK I knew exactly what fuel choice I had. At the time I booked they were cheaper than Alamo too.
