Provides a comprehensive overview of Rush' entire 30-year musical output in the context of an exciting concert performed in front of 40,000 lively Brazilian fans
Bad Points
While adding great atmosphere to the DVD, the crowd noise may annoy some listeners
General Comments
This DVD contains footage of a concert performed by Rush in Rio in 2003 in front of a crowd of 40,000 fans as well as a documentary about the Brazilian leg of their tour. Having last been to a (somewhat disappointing) Rush concert in the late 80s this DVD was a revelation; this veteran band of 50-something musicians puts in a performance that is not only technically proficient but also surprisingly full of energy. Clearly Rush were feeding off the enthusiasm of the extremely lively Brazilian fans. The chanting and singing of the crowd adds a lot of atmosphere to the soundtrack at the cost of obscuring the band's performance at times. On balance, I believe that this adds to rather than detracts from the DVD. Rush are not the most visual of performers but it is nice to see them enjoying themselves here, and the film as a whole manages to succeed thanks to the creative stage set, crowd shots and good editing.
